MPP Stevens calls on province to hold General Motors accountable for contaminated St. Catharines site

QUEEN’S PARK – NDP MPP Jennie Stevens (St. Catherines) tabled a motion calling on the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to use powers under Sections 17 and 18 of the Environmental Protection Act to hold General Motors accountable for remediation of the former Ontario Street GM property in St. Catharines:

“Fifteen years after General Motors abandoned the Ontario Street site, St. Catharines residents are still living beside contamination, unanswered questions, and a complete lack of accountability,” said MPP Stevens.

“Families deserve to know their water, soil, and air are safe, and taxpayers should not be left paying to clean up a mess created by a multinational corporation. That’s why we are calling on the Minister to use the powers available under Sections 17 and 18 of the Environmental Protection Act to hold GM accountable for remediation.

“This community has waited long enough for action, transparency, and a real plan to protect public health and finally restore this site for community use.”
