NDP: Conservative cuts escalating unemployment toll

LONDON – Official Opposition NDP critic for Economic Development and Job Creation Terence Kernaghan (London North Centre) and critic for Labour Jamie West (Sudbury) are raising concerns after Conservative cuts forced program closures at Pathways Employment Help Centre, a London-based agency that connects single mothers and individuals on social assistance with jobs.

“Every day, we see the struggles of people trying to get back on their feet due to the increased cost of living," said Kernaghan. "The Conservatives have done nothing to make life more affordable, especially for those on ODSP and Ontario Works. Now, we learn that crucial programs meant to assist those seeking employment have been axed. Cancelling these programs to save a quick buck comes with heartbreaking consequences down the line. This government doesn't care about individuals trying to rebuild their lives. At every corner they prioritize their wealthiest friends while the rest of Ontarians fight to stay afloat."

Jamie West said, "It was already hard enough to live on ODSP and Ontario Works before, and now it’s almost impossible under Ford's Conservatives. It's not enough for most people to get by. Now the Conservatives are making it harder for those who can transition off social assistance. Ending a successful program doesn’t make sense."
