NDP: Ford lets taxpayers get scammed by Therme’s scheme

TORONTO – Following the Toronto Star investigation into Therme’s finances, Marit Stiles, Leader of the Ontario NDP, is raising new questions about due diligence and calling on the Ford government to cancel the deal and answer for the billions that he is leaving taxpayers on the hook for:

“Doug Ford is gambling away billions of public tax-payer dollars on a luxury spa run by a company whose finances are a mess. By citing the potential success of future projects not yet completed, Therme managed to get a hold of prime public parkland and billions of tax dollars from the Ford government.

“While families are struggling to pay rent and find a doctor, Ford’s spa scheme will cost the equivalent of $400 per household. Where was the due diligence? Where is accountability? Why isn’t the Premier protecting Ontarians from this scam?”

Later this fall, MPPs will be reviewing the Auditor General’s report on the Ontario Place redevelopment at the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.
